How to use the OSi Map Viewer?

Please see our instructional video on how to use our mapviewer (see below)

How can I browse the maps?

To browse the maps available on the Website click the 'BROWSE MAPS' button, this can be found in the top left hand corner of the 'Products' page. You will now see a small scale map of Ireland.

Map Viewer

There are two options for locating your area of interest:

1. Pan and zoom tools. To locate your chosen area, position the crosshairs of your cursor in the general area. You can then use the zoom tools, which should be visible in the top left hand corner of the screen, to zoom in and out. When you zoom in mapping will be available at a more detailed level, the more you zoom in the more detailed the map will appear. If you want to re-centre the map use the “pan” tool Pan tool icon This will move the centre point of the map on screen.

2. Search function. The search button is located in the black MENU window visible at the top right hand corner of the page. Here you can search for a location by entering the full address or the street name (e.g. 2, Main Street, Ballymore). If you do not know the full street address or if your area of interest is in a rural location there is an option for a more advanced search. Click on the “advanced search” button here you have two main options. You can conduct an “area search” or a “co-ordinate search”.

  • The “area search” function allows you to conduct a search based on county, town, street, premises and locality. Use the drop down lists to enter as much information as you can. Then hit the “SEARCH” button, this will zoom you to the location you have specified.
  • The co-ordinate search allows for the input of an x,y co-ordinate pair. These co-ordinates can be based on ITM or ING i.e. International Transverse Mercator or Irish National Grid.

How do I know what scale I am looking at on the mapviewer?

You can use the scale bar on the left of the screen to choose which scale you want to view. Also the "STATUS" box in the bottom left corner will show what scale you are viewing.

Is the OSi environmental report the same as getting a builders' survey?

No. The Environmental Report is intended to be used for information purposes only. The Environmental Report is not a risk assessment report and does not, in any way howsoever, constitute advice. You assume all responsibility for assessing the data and information contained in the Environmental Report and assessing what further investigations, if any, ought to be made and by whom, in relation to that data and information. In order to assist you in this regard, where Third Party Data is included in an Environmental Report, contact details for the relevant Third Party responsible for that Third Party Data will be provided in the Environmental Report where possible. OSi also strongly recommends that you obtain the advice of an appropriately qualified professional in relation to the significance and assessment of the data and information contained in the Environmental Report and any further investigations that ought to be carried out in relation to that data and information.

What level of information does the Street Map layer contain?

The Street Map is a representation of Ordnance Survey Ireland source data, which is captured and stored at scales of 1:1000 (urban areas), 1:2500 (suburban areas) and 1:5000 (rural areas).

The Street Map has been designed for use as a location map to assist you, along with the ’Search’ facility, in pin-pointing your location for the purposes of product selection. It is available to view at a scale of 1:1000, however it does not include the full range of features or level of detail that is available in the source data. The Street Map is also referenced to a particular point in time, and therefore may not be as up-to-date as a purchased product.

I see an error in the Street Map, what should I do about it?

If you notice any errors in the Street Map, please let us know by using the Map Reporting Tool on our website at the following link https://www.osi.ie/contact-us/map-reporting-tool/

The Street Map in the map viewer should only be used to locate your area of interest for the purpose of product selection. It is a representation of OSi source data at a point in time, and may not always reflect the completeness, accuracy or currency of a purchased product. Errors with the map viewer will be fixed in future releases. However, if on receipt of your maps you feel there is an error please contact custserv@osi.ie
